Howard K. Koh, MD, MPH awarded 2025 Blake Cady Award

Tobacco Free Mass presented its 2025 Blake Cady Award for Leadership in Tobacco Control to Howard K. Koh, MD, MPH at the Annual Tobacco Free Mass meeting on December 4th.  Dr. Olivia Liao, with the Mass Medical Society, provided the opening remarks. Dorothy Ross Cady presented the 2025 Blake Cady Award and spoke about the enduring significance of legacies, like those created by her late husband Blake and now Howard.

Howard graciously accepted the award and introduced an amazing group of people to join him including Carole Allen, Ray Considine, Don Gudaitis, Lauren Holm Karen Rouse, Deb Beatty Mel, Lee Chelminiak, and Susan Webb. They were a part of the driving force, created by Blake, to become the second state ever to pass a dedicated tobacco tax through a ballot initiative, known as Question 1. Howard told the story surrounding Question 1, highlighting Blake's leadership and the history of the Coalition for a Healthy Future, known today as Tobacco Free Mass. He also spoke about the profound impact Blake had on his life.

"In conclusion, I want to share with you another aspect of what makes Howard such an appropriate choice for this leadership award. Howard, I remember the very personal message you sent to Blake in his final days. You attempted to contact him and upon learning he was failing , you sent him a very personal email which he asked me to read several times because he was so touched. That message went beyond your professional achievements as a scientist, leader and educator. It revealed what a compassionate person you are and unafraid to reveal your capacity to care.

Howard, please accept this award in honor of the enduring bond Blake had with you – a special relationship indeed - and in recognition of all you have done and contributed to public health but in particular tobacco control."
